• An arrest is an act of depriving a person of his or her liberty usually in relation to the investigation and prevention of a crime or harm to others and oneself as well.The term is anglo-norman in origin and its related to the french word arrêt, meaning "stop".

• Arrest:(criminal, suspect) to catch and not let them go free because they are suspected of committing a crime.To be under arrest:to be held by the police after an arrest.
