TORT

A tort is a juducial term referring to a wrong or fault. It differs from a crime in that a tort does not include a breach of a duty owed to a society in general. Whilst it is true that many acts are considered both a tort and a crime, a crime will be prosecuted by the State, whilst a tort usually involves some form of private interaction between the parts.
One who commits a tortious act is called a tortfeasor.
The equivalent of tort in civil jurisdictions is delict.
A person who suffers a tortious act is liable to be paid "damages" usually in the form of monetary compensation.
